Debris Protection Optimisation of a Realistic Unmanned Spacecraft Using Shield

چکیده

The SHIELD software model performs two distinct functions: first, it provides a capability to assess the through-mission survivability of an unmanned spacecraft against debris impact; and second, it provides a means to optimise the debris protection strategy of an unmanned spacecraft. In this paper we illustrate the second of these two functions by applying SHIELD to the protection optimisation of a ‘realistic’ satellite.

Hypervelocity impact protection by a nominal two-plate aluminum spacecraft shield against milli- and centimeter-sized space debris

Hypervelocity collisions with space debris (SD, natural meteoroids and man-made artifacts) can significantly affect the performance of spacecraft. Here, I use an adaptivemesh Eulerian hydrodynamic code, Mie-Grüneisen solid-mechanics, and a simple material-failure model, running on a modern PC, to analyze the protection afforded by a nominal two-plate aluminum shield to hypervelocity collisions ...

Failure mechanism of monolayer graphene under hypervelocity impact of spherical projectile

The excellent mechanical properties of graphene have enabled it as appealing candidate in the field of impact protection or protective shield. By considering a monolayer graphene membrane, in this work, we assessed its deformation mechanisms under hypervelocity impact (from 2 to 6 km/s), based on a serial of in silico studies. It is found that the cracks are formed preferentially in the zigzag ...

Stereoscopic Imaging Determines Space Debris Impact Crater Distribution and Morphology

Impacts of fast traveling natural micrometeoroids and anthropogenic space debris are widely considered as one of the two major threats to humankind’s presence in near-Earth space. The dimensions of particles that pose an impact threat to spacecraft range from micrometer-sized micrometeoroids to the 8.5-ton Tiangong-1 [1], which will re-enter in early 2018 to be superseded by the 8-ton Envisat [...

Multi-objective optimisation for spacecraft design for demise and survivability

The paper presents the development of a multi-objective optimisation framework to study the effects that preliminary design choices have on the demisability and the survivability of a spacecraft. Building a spacecraft such that most of it will demise during the re-entry through design-for-demise strategies may lead to design that are more vulnerable to space debris impacts, thus compromising th...

*thermal, Radiation and Impact Protective Shields (trips) for Robotic and Human Space Exploration Missions

New concepts for protective shields for NASA’s Crew Exploration Vehicles (CEVs) and planetary probes offer improved mission safety and affordability. Hazards include radiation from cosmic rays and solar particle events, hypervelocity impacts from orbital debris/micrometeorites, and the extreme heating environment experienced during entry into planetary atmospheres. The traditional approach for ...
